The 1898 Inn is located in Historic Lanesboro,
a town of uncommon charm nestled in the deep cliffs of South
Eastern Minnesota's Bluff Country.
It is no surpise that the early inhabitants of Lanesboro were drawn to this secluded wooded valley and its tranquil countryside. The beautiful Root River provided water and power, the woodlands and hillsides provided ample lumber and stone for building and the fertile soil, lush cropland. Local immigrant families and their descendants have been shaped by the nature of the land. Lanesboro is a product of their collective personal histories.
Today Lanesboro is the Bed and Breakfast Capitol of Minnesota and is renown for its idyllic setting and beautiful Root River Bike Trail. Our visitors return again and again for bicycling, canoeing, kayaking, fishing and birding.
In the natural beauty of the surrounding farmlands traditional country life continues. Members of the local Amish community still lead an unmechanized way of life reminiscent of past ages. Visitors mingle with the Amish at our farmer's market or meet Amish craftsman, bakers and farmers on one of Lanesboro's Amish tours.
Lanesboro is home to the Commonweal Theatre and the Lanesboro Art Center. The professional theatre and lively arts scene provide a rich and diverse array of events throughout the year. Check the Lanesboro calendar of events for plays, films, concerts, studio tours, gallery shows and art fairs.
Lanesboro is a unique shopping destination, as well. With interesting purveyors of noted regional art, crafts, clothing, handmade goods and organic food. The nearby town of Harmony is awash in antiques.
